Our Wonderland: Arc 5 Part 1 1/2 Out Now!
HELLO, CELLOS! IT'S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR! That time being, of course, when I unleash another unholy atrocity upon the world! YEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH.
That's right. The time is finally upon us. THE GRAND FINALE no, not the grand finale because I have no concept of scope or restraint and still haven't actually wrapped this monstrosity up yet. NO. Instead. You get basically another full arc's worth of content slapped into the middle of this jolly jumpin' jalopy that is My Big Fat Queer Horror Game™. I already went into the reasons why in the previous devlog so I won't bore you with them now. Instead I'll jump STRAIGHT INTO THE CARFAX.
My characters looking upon the Happy Horrors I have lined up for them.
Where did we leave off last time........ OH YEAH. In this Final Fete of the Our Wonderland storyline, everyone has regained their memories of the silly antics they got up to (see: all their brutal deaths) throughout the previous loops. This was Bad as it led them even further into the deep end of their already spent mental limits. This was Good because things finally started changing??? I guess it's all in the attitude! At any rate, upon recovering their wits (or what was left of them), Iggy and Genzou trekked once more into Wonderland where everything was even MORE effed up beyond reason (as you might expect). However, they still somehow manage to make it to Gidget (yay!). Who tries to kill them (not yay?). But along the way finally manages to come to terms with some things and figure themself out (yay!). Leaving the trio ready and rarin' to find the next one of their friends and see just how royally effed up HE is (here's a hint: it's bad).
This part covers their Holly Jolly Journey to the Castle. Which, you might be thinking, how could that possibly have grown so large that it warrants its own part??? WELL. THIS IS ME WE'RE TALKING ABOUT. So you can expect a lot of things to happen along the way, from some intense battles, to heart-wrenching chats, to delightful rabbit antics, to OVER-DRAMATIC CUTSCENES. So. Yay! Hope you enjoy.
HERE'S THE DEETS, BEETS:
- 33k more words of content (around 2-3 hours worth; less if you don't try out all the choices) bringing the total word count of the game up to 256k words, my god
- A RIDICULOUS 74 NEW CGS???????????
- 3 new cinematic semi-animated cutscenes (one of which is quite long)! Because I don't know the meaning of "Carrot, no"
- LOTS OF INTENSE ACTION SEQUENCES???? The scripting got a litol bit ridonkulous this time around...
- Poignant bittersweet scenes that will RIP YOUR HEART OUT
- Horrific scenes that will RIP YOUR TEETH OUT
- Jerry!!!1!!1!!!!
- Lots of sweet new tracks because this is apparently where I go all in on the Epic Music Train
So hopefully all these ~ Goodies ~ will still make it worthwhile even though I still haven't finished this frickin' thing yet.
BUT OMG WAIT HOLD THE PHONE. DO MINE EARS DECEIVE ME? C-C-C-C-COULD THERE BE..... SOME NEW FEATURES??????????
Yes, yes, there are, though perhaps not quite as Fun and Extravagant as it was with Part 1, I have continued to clunk-clunk-clunk away in the background doing various things to make the game Better and more Polished. So here's some random stuff I've done on the feature and QoL side of things that should hopefully be welcome additions:
- New replay gallery! YEAHHHHHHHH. Now you can replay all your FAVORITE HORRIFIC SCENES FROM THE GAME AT THE CLICK OF A BUTTON??? omg,,,, what a treat. I added this because some people had asked about whether I'd ever make some sort of Choose an Arc option; however, that kind of feature wouldn't work because all your choices throughout the game add up to the end, so you can't just start in the middle and miss a whole bunch of choices. SO. I have done this to hopefully assuage at least part of that angst and allow peeps to jump back to a bunch of key scenes if they simply want to relive them. Note that, like with the gallery I released last time, all the scenes will be locked until you view them... and I apologize to those who've already played the game but will still need to go back and unlock them. FORGIVE ME.
- I've been doing various work on the Gallery in general, giving it a little spit shine, that kinda stuff. You'll notice I've now moved the music room into the gallery proper rather than just sticking it in the About page LOL Now it's much more intuitive. I've also added some censor/warnings to some of the CGs. I know I have the censored mode that censors gory CGs in both the game and gallery, but I thought perhaps even if you don't mind the gore so much, you might not want to be constantly jump-scared by some of the particularly graphic CGs while just taking a jaunty peruse through the gallery. So things like some of the more extreme gore and SA are now censored with a little marker in the previews and will only be shown in their entirety when you click on them. PROGRESS.
- HERE'S A GREAT ONE! You can now skip cutscenes and credits! YEAHHHHHHH. If you've already seen the cutscene / credits in question, you'll be given a little pop-up in the corner allowing you to press K to skip. This was......... A LOT MORE ANNOYING TO IMPLEMENT THAN YOU WOULD EXPECT. But I hope this will be helpful for people who want to play back through the game quickly, for instance, to try out different choices, etc. YOU CAN NOW SPEED THROUGH THE ENTIRE GAME IN APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES ( I tested it LDKAJFSDLKF). Talk about CliffsNotes! Similar to the gallery stuff, when you first go back through, you'll still need to watch the scenes / credits in questions, because the variables to unlock them are New, so you won't have them yet. SORRY. B-b-but... at least... after that... you'll be able to skip things as much as you want... which may come in handy leading up to the next and final part, where you'll need to make The Final Choice. And the options you'll be given for The Final Choice will be dependent on the choices you've made throughout the game. So if you want different choices to be available or didn't get the choice(s) you were hoping to, you'll be able to go back relatively quickly through the game to try out different choices. (I keep making it out like it's some big, deep surprise what this final choice is but it's not really that special and I'm sure you all know what it already is, you're just picking the character whose epilogue you want to see, but you'll only be able to choose a character if you've gotten close enough to them throughout the game......... SURPRISE)
OK I think that's pretty much it. I've done various other small things like some GUI updates here and there. Added a new music channel so that if people turn the sound down it won't affect the handful of moments where I need to play two music tracks at the same time so would use a sound channel to do so (not that anyone cares about this or would even notice...). Did some cleaning up of typos. But nothing else too big. This is slowly but surely turning into a halfway decent and professional game!!!!1!!!!1 /maybe
OK LET'S MOVE ON.
The install for Arc 5 Part 1 1/2 should be the same as for all the previous arcs.
- If you haven't played Our Wonderland before: You don't need to do anything special! Just download the game and play from the beginning.
- If you have played Our Wonderland before and have a save file: Download the new Arc 5 Part 1 1/2 version of the game (a.k.a. version 5.15) and start 'er up. Probably, you won't need to do anything else (because Ren'Py keeps persistent save data from your games). However, if for whatever reason, you don't see any of your old saves, copy over the "saves" folder from your previous version of the game, and paste that into the "game" folder of the new version of the game:
If you can't remember which save file is near the start of Part 1 1/2, look for a save titled "Arc 5: Gidget, Again." It could be on a "To be continued" screen, or a black screen, or the CG with the hands, etc., but so long as you look for "Gidget, Again," you'll be somewhere close to the start of Part 1 1/2 (it starts immediately after the CG with the hands.)
YIPPEE SKIPPEE.
Hopefully you don't have any problems getting it all started!
Btw I have also added this screen to the beginning of Arc 5:
THIS IS BECAUSE I TRULY HIGHLY RECOMMEND PLAYING THAT GAME BEFORE STARTING PART 1 1/2.
Obviously you don't HAVE TO. I just don't want people to be confused about a certain, uh......... character........... that plays a somewhat large role in Part 1 1/2 but whom you probably won't even remember who he is if you haven't played OFW so you might be like... what.
There are also a number of small references all throughout Arc 5, even in Part 1, that half-referenced stuff from OFW. None of these would be confusing if you haven't played OFW; however, I imagine they might be a little more fun as like an "OH!" moment if you have.
Either way, again, not required/essential, but I do recommend it, which is why I added this screen.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WE AS ALWAYS HAVEEEEEEEEEE...
Arc 5 Part 1 1/2 abides by the same general content warnings as the rest of the game, which include:
- Strong adult language
- Strong graphic violence (both illustrated and textual)
- Sexual violence/assault/unwanted sexual advances
- Disturbing and potentially triggering elements
I'm also adding in a handful of new general warnings specifically for this part! These include:
- Intense action sequences with quick movements, shaking screen and sprites, flashing lights, and eye strain
- Moments of extra strong adult language and sexual references
This first point will be combined with the "brief moment of eye strain" point I had already included in Arc 5 when releasing the first part. This part really amps up the intensity when it comes to like... action sequences and things moving on the screen and lots of quick stuff happening in succession, flashing stuff, etc. So I wanted to add an emphasized warning for that so people can know what they're getting into. I've added more details on what these include / where they happen in the detailed content warnings below.
As for the language, that's, well... Genzou... mostly just one scene... but it is quite intense for a moment LOL
And, as always, here is the more-detailed breakdown of content warnings! These contain spoilers for obvious reasons, so don't click if you don't want to see. If you're at all concerned about the general content warnings, I do recommend checking them out just in case:
Arc 5 Part 1 1/2 Detailed Content Warnings
- Strong graphic violence (action sequences include a lot of descriptive depictions of violence, including characters getting bitten, hit, kicked, knocked to the ground, limbs bitten off, bodies ripped open, etc.; someone's previous injury is exacerbated and their stiches ripped out, leading to some blood; someone's arm is completely bitten through by a rabbit; someone is implied to have cut their heart out and the remaining scar is shown, brief flashes of CGs are shown in silhouette of the act occurring; a censored room filled with flayed bodies and viscera is shown while the scene is described in detailed text and it's very intense; multiple people are held captive and repeatedly slammed to the ground, resulting in various injuries, broken jaws and noses, etc.; someone's finger is chopped off and both the finger and stump are shown multiple times in detail; someone bites off a piece of a rabbit's arm; someone uses a knife to cut open someone's chest and then yank it open further rather viscerally)
- Sexual references, sexual violence/assault/unwanted sexual advances (sexual humor, jokes, and references are made throughout, including usage of the word d*ck; references are made to a past instance of sexual harassment; mean-spirited taunts of a sexual nature about another character are made during an argument, someone has a lascivious-looking expression at times; someone presses their foot into someone else's face)
- Disturbing and potentially triggering elements (implied cannibalism, both of human and rabbit nature; implied past torture and captivity; multiple characters are held captive and threatened and taunted with a large knife; references are made to past instances of bullying)
- Intense action sequences, eye strain, and flashing movements (a fight scene against many small red beings occurs in which the creatures are constantly running quickly across the screen, whipping in and out of view, and sometimes zooming large in front of the screen, the screen flashes and shakes a number of times; a fight/chase scene in an attempt to storm a castle occurs in which multiple rabbits quickly flash across the screen many times, coupled with flashing and screen shake; a scene in a darkened room occurs in which occasional flashes of lightning brighten up the entire screen; a chase scene in a castle occurs in which many rabbits flash across the screen and the screen shakes a number of times; a scene occurs in which glitchy text and VHS-esque staticy effects are superimposed across the screen)
- Moments of extra strong adult language (an argument occurs in which there is an exorbitant number of occurrences of the word f*ck)
Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about anything! I am always happy to provide even more details about any particular scenes you might be worried about or provide screenshots, etc.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand.............
THAT'S IT, I GUESS.
WOO!
I hope everyone will enjoy this part. As always, I feel like I've put a ton of myself into it. And just a lot of work in general. As I just really wanted it to be the best it could be. So I hope that it will live up to people's expectations laksdjfas
After this, I plan to quietly start working on the finale. As always, I have no idea what kind of time frame to give. I will not be doing Spooktober this year, unfortunately. Both because 1) I cannot take another one-month long break + recovery time to make a long involved game and put off work on actually finishing the main game even longer; and 2) I'll actually be away/busy for parts of September (including a big chunk right in the middle) for mostly family stuff/trips, so I wouldn't have time to finish something anyway. I am sad as I had so much fun with it last year, but we'll see for next year! And also there will be plenty of other jam-related opportunities once I finish the main game, too. So anyway, I might be a tad bit quieter in September, especially while I'm traveling, as I'll probably be using that month to rest up a bit after all this work + I'm getting on the cusp of burn-out a bit as a result. So I'll just be slowly starting to write and work on the finale + maybe my usual occasional bout of self-indulgent art LOL
And that's it for real this time!
